Needed: A Tiny Purple Car!

Monday, June 27, 2011 by Manlan Liu
My 10-year old daughter wrote an essay about what she wants to do when she becomes a teenager. Of all the things she wants to do, one item in particularl made me not only smile, but think. She wants to drive a tiny purple car; tiny, because she wants to leave the smallest bio-foot-print possible and purple because she is really into it, "a royal color" as she describes it.

She realizes there are not that many tiny or purple cars out there. But it doesn't stop her from wanting one. "I still want one," she declared.

I wonder if the OEMs will ever produce 'naked' cars that allow you to customize the color afterwards, like how you can buy naked furniture and dress it any way you want, purple or even floral.

Would any OEM out there take this order and fill it in 5-6 years? This could become a cool trend for minicars. Imagine all the girls driving tiny purple cars as their fashion statement. Calling all automotive forecasters, consumer researchers and digital marketers, do you see it coming?

Ford Fiesta comes in "magenta". It's almost purple.

Manlan, your Daughter and her peer group are the consumers of the future so their needs should be at the forefront of the OEM designers minds. Scion and Ford Fiesta are currently leading the pack related to the "design your own custom small car" idea but I'm sure others will follow as creative consumers like your Daughter continue to make their future desires known. Great Blog!
